A late 18th to early 19th c. English Georgian Oak Candle Box
Candle boxes played a large role in the pre-electric homes,
as candles were the main light source ensuring people went through a lot of them!
A large stock would be stored out of the way for use.
The slender design of this candle box denotes its use to store long, slender candles.
It has an arched top with a decorative design.
with a sloping hinged lid top.
It has a heart shaped opening so it can hang on a wall.
The Candle box is mostly made of oak
with the use of another type of wood
on the front of the box, with inlaid decorative elements.
Nail and glue construction with all original hinges.
Appx. Dimensions tapered Rectangle shape
Height 12" lower slope to 14" at top of the slope
Total height 18 1/2"
Width 7 1/2" top of the box to 4 1/2" at the bottom of the box
Depth 5 1/4" top of box, 3 3/4" at the bottom.
