The Aesthetic Movement
was an artistic movement from the 1860's to he 1900's.
This movement, which reacted against Victorian industrialism, 
valued sensation and beauty over moral or functional purposes,

The beautiful box is fully hallmarked on the bottom of interior, partially marked in the inner lid.

    Footnote:
    Edmund Wattis Dumke and Carol Dean Browning Dumke were each descendants of two notable twentieth century families in the western United States. Together they were generous philanthropists, horse enthusiasts, and art collectors. Ed was also an entrepreneur. Ed married his Ogden hometown sweetheart, Carol Dean Browning, on Sept. 12, 1950.

    Ed's family company, Utah Construction, was founded by Edmund Orson (Ed's grandfather), Warren, and William Wattis of Ogden in 1900. Utah Construction built the Feather River Railway between Salt Lake City and Oakland in 1911. The success of this difficult project led to UC building the Hetch Hetchy dam in 1917 and being the lead contractor to build the Hoover Dam in 1931, which was the largest construction contract ever signed by the US government at that time.

Condition: this box is in very fine original condition with a minor loss to the applied silver along one of the scrolls., there are no monograms, the gilt interior is bright, minor silver-paste residue from a long ago polishing. (SEE PHOTOS)
