A rare and unusual 19th century bisque nodder, by Conta & Boehme, Germany, circa 1880. It has a moving head and tongue! When tongue is pushed in and head is rocked, the tongue slides out. It depicts a seated Indian Woman sticking her tongue out while looking in the mirror. This piece is well crafted / detailed. The seated female figure is lightly age stained. The underside showing a piece of wood attached to a bisque "bulb" is the counterbalance that enables the head to move back and forth and the tongue to slide out. The German bisque, c1870s is a parody of the English Colonial Empire of India. This nodder reflects derisive attitudes England held towards their 19th century colonial victims. Approx.
