A mangle board, is a traditional Northern European household tool to smooth and flatten damp linen by rolling it tightly around a dowel and then working the board back and forth over the cloth to press out wrinkles
As a courtship gift a young man would carve or commission a decorated mangle board for the woman he wished to marry.
