17th Century Italian Renaissance Carved Wood Side Chair

A wonderful Italian Renaissance walnut side chair. The splats and front stretchers are tracery carved.
The legs are straight, and have front, back and side stretchers of various designs.
The back rails are topped with acanthus leaf finials. This chair has a lovely patina from age.
This carved Renaissance side chair uses the classical design that was used in Italy during the 14th Century and continued to spread throughout Europe until the 17th Century. The design is simple in structure with a generous use of classical ornaments, such as the acanthus leaf and pilasters, this is a fine example of detailed carving on the back splat. The upper splat has a beautiful carved floral motif, with a beaded cross and beaded arch at the top.
This chair is entirely mortised and pegged. The back legs are finished with later 20th century glides.

This 300-400 year old chair is in good age-related condition, with some old and newer repairs, has scuffs, some minor losses to wood, missing glue blocks, shrinkage and worming throughout from its age, joints are loose from shrinkage.
