A 17th Century Italian Apothecary Jug
The medium used was called Maiolica (Majolica)
which is a tin glazed earthenware featuring
an original Apothecary Insignia & the date of 1682.
Apothecary jugs from the 17th century Italy served both
functional and decorative purposes.
This one is embellished with a hand painted blue & green design over a white ground.
The storage vessel was used in apothecaries as containers
for ointments, oil's and various medicines.
This jug was likely intended to hold Rose Water or Rose Oil.
Well established as a profession by the seventeenth century,
the apothecaries were chemists, mixing and selling their own medicines.
They sold medicines from a fixed shopfront, catering to other medical practitioners,
such as surgeons, but also to lay customers walking in from the street.

Condition:
this 340 year old apothecary jar is in great condition for it's age
with only minor damage and original kiln flaws to the base and body,
a hairline crack at the upper rim. and an overall crazing to the glaze.
