We are offering a 19th century Bronze seated Mercury by Pierre Marius Montagne.
This 19th-century Bronze Sculpture is the work of Pierre Marius Montagne, the Roman God Mercury.
Born in France (1828-1879), Pierre Marius Montagne was famous throughout his career, receiving impressive commissions.
He trained under Francois Rudes Atelier. He was soon in charge of the architectural and sculptural decoration of the Grand Theatre in Toulon.
Montagne won the French Government National Lottery Prize; he garnered medals in 1867-1869 at the Paris Salon.
Six Montagne Sculptures are in the permanent collection of The Musee de Toulon, France.
In this Roman version (the Greek equivalent, Hermes), Montagne cast in a series of twenty and fifty.
Mercury was a popular subject of artists/sculptors of the 19th century, but not all depictions of Mercury prove to be as exceptional as Montagne's.
Notice the handsome model of Mercury's head and the delicate features of the hair, face, feet, and hands. His Seated Mercury achieves a very relaxed yet elegant stance.
This is a large 27-inch hollow cast bronze; it is signed and dated 1867.
